Between control and unpredictability, moments arise in which choices, expectations and consequences fall into an uncertain relationship. What do we really control, and on what terms? Our attempts to navigate established practices and beliefs extend into language and identity. Do we question the ideas we have been taught to accept? How do we understand happiness, and the forces that threaten it, amid the competing pressures of hierarchical systems? The need for control can bring a sense of safety, but it can also lead us to exercise power over other people and species. The controlled cannot exist without the uncontrolled, and nothing is kept under control without something else becoming subject to it. Yet the upper hand is often an illusion: room for interpretation remains, nature pushes back, and what we imagine we have in our grasp becomes a force that governs us.
